Flow/Line Stopping

At Flowstop Services, we don’t just install gas connections — we also handle projects involving existing ‘live’ gas supplies. In such cases, it’s essential to meet all relevant safety and regulatory requirements when working with live gas.

Simply turning off the gas can be costly and disruptive. Whenever possible, we use temporary flow-stopping methods that allow the gas to keep flowing while we carry out our work. Importantly, we need to stop the flow in a specific section of the pipeline without affecting the supply throughout the entire system. We primarily use two main methods of flow-stopping:

Isolation using stopples and bags

Isolation is achieved through methods such as ‘bagging off’ (or ‘bag off’) insertion and/or stopples insertion into the pipe. The method we choose depends mainly on three factors: the pressure of the gas flowing through the pipe, the pipe’s material, and its diameter.

BAGSTOPS

Our bag stopping service is carried out on Steel, Cast Iron, and PE pipes. Using our specialist equipment, we are able to perform operations on pipes up to 42 inches in diameter. This flow-stopping technique is used on low-pressure mains and allows the client to modify the pipeline in a gas-free environment.

STOPPLING - STEEL & CAST IRON

At Flowstop Services, we pride ourselves on being one of only a few companies in the country capable of performing large stopple operations. We can stopple pipes up to 42 inches in diameter. With our self-sufficient 18-tonne and 26-tonne mobile workshops equipped with HIAB cranes, Flowstop Services is able to carry out large stopple operations safely and efficiently.

PE STOPPLE

PE stoppling in the gas industry has faced challenges in the past, but we have worked hard to design and field-test a new system that protects PE pipes from distortion due to pressure and the weight of the stopples, thereby maintaining their integrity. This innovative design, approved by the GDNs, covers sizes ranging from 250mm to 469mm and is suitable for both vertical and horizontal applications.
